Click or drag to upload a photo

JPG / PNG / WEBP supported. A front-facing, hat-free shot on a plain background works best. Max 20MB.

Why use this online ID photo generator?

๐Ÿ“

13 standard sizes

1-inch, small 1-inch, large 1-inch, 2-inch, small 2-inch, large 2-inch, 3-inch, passport, visa, driver licence and social security card. One click crops to the standard ratio.

๐Ÿ“

Pixel and DPI accurate

Pixels are derived from the millimetre size and your chosen 300 or 350 DPI, so the export already meets the hard requirements of application systems.

๐ŸŽจ

One-click background swap

Detects a plain background automatically and replaces it with white, blue, red or light grey. The tolerance slider adapts to different shooting conditions.

๐Ÿ—œ๏ธ

Compress to a target KB

Enter a size limit such as 20KB. The tool searches for the best compression quality, stays under the limit and shows the real file size live.

๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ

Print layout saves paper

Automatically fills 5-inch or 6-inch photo paper with as many copies as fit, complete with cutting guides. Printing at home gets much cheaper.

๐Ÿ”’

100% local, no upload

Reading, cropping, background replacement and compression all happen inside your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.

How to make an ID photo in four steps

1

Upload a photo

Click the upload area or drag a file in. A front-facing, hat-free half-body shot with even lighting and a clean background works best.

2

Pick a size and resolution

Choose a preset such as 1-inch, 2-inch or passport. For unusual requirements pick Custom and enter millimetres, then select 300 or 350 DPI.

3

Align, swap background, fine-tune

Drag the photo to reframe it and use the head-top, eye and chin guides to align the face. Turn on background swap if needed, then adjust brightness and contrast.

4

Export or print a layout

Enter a target KB and click Download photo for a single ID photo, or click Print layout to fill a photo paper sheet and print a whole batch at once.

Common use cases

Exam registration

Teaching, civil service and graduate exam portals impose strict size and file-weight rules. Get it right the first time.

Resumes and job hunting

1-inch or 2-inch photos with a white or blue background, ready to drop into a CV or a recruiting platform.

Passports and visas

Chinese passports use 33ร—48 mm, US visas use 2ร—2 inches and Japanese visas use 45ร—45 mm. Just pick the preset.

Licences and cards

Driver licences, social security cards and student IDs all have fixed formats that can be submitted online.

Diplomas and certificates

The large 1-inch format with a blue or red background suits diplomas, degree certificates and professional qualifications.

Self-service printing

Generate a layout sheet and send it straight to a print shop or kiosk, far cheaper than re-shooting at a studio.

ID photo basics

How are ID photo sizes defined?

"1-inch" and "2-inch" refer to the physical size in millimetres: 25ร—35 mm and 35ร—49 mm respectively. Application systems usually ask for a pixel size instead, and the two are linked by resolution: pixels = millimetres รท 25.4 ร— DPI. That is why the same 1-inch format is 295ร—413 px at 300 DPI but 344ร—482 px at 350 DPI.

What is the difference between 300 DPI and 350 DPI?

DPI means dots per inch and describes print precision. The higher the value, the more pixels per unit area, the finer the photo and the larger the file. 300 DPI is the universal standard for ID photos and what nearly every application system validates against; a few print shops ask for 350 DPI. When in doubt, choose 300 DPI.

Which background colour should I choose?

It depends on the purpose. White is used for ID cards, passports, visas and driver licences; blue for diplomas, resumes, work badges and professional certificates; red for marriage certificates and some qualifications; light grey for certain foreign resumes and visa applications. If no requirement is stated, white is the safest choice.

Why do so many portals cap photos at 20KB?

Storage and transfer cost money, so upload limits are common โ€” typically 20KB, 30KB, 50KB or 100KB. File size is reduced mainly by lowering JPEG quality: the lower the quality, the smaller the file but the worse the image. This tool binary-searches the quality range to find the highest quality that still fits the target, so no image quality is wasted.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is this ID photo generator free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit. Every photo is processed inside your own browser.
Q: What size and pixel dimensions is a 1-inch ID photo?
A 1-inch ID photo measures 25ร—35 mm. The pixel size depends on resolution: about 295ร—413 px at 300 DPI and about 344ร—482 px at 350 DPI. This tool calculates the exact pixels for the DPI you choose.
Q: Can the background replacement handle busy backgrounds?
Background replacement samples the background colour along the photo's edges and then replaces border-connected pixels that fall within a colour tolerance, so it works best on photos shot against a plain or near-plain background. If the background contains furniture or foliage, cut the subject out in an editor first, or raise the tolerance and fine-tune the image.
Q: How do I compress a photo to under 20KB?
Type 20 into the target size field. The tool binary-searches the best JPEG quality so the file lands under 20KB while staying as sharp as possible, and shows the actual file size in real time.
Q: Does the exported photo contain 300 DPI metadata?
Yes. Most online tools export images tagged as 72 DPI, which application systems may reject. This tool writes the JFIF density fields into JPEG and a pHYs chunk into PNG so the file carries the real 300 or 350 DPI value.
Q: Do I need to cut out the photos from the print layout myself?
Yes. The layout leaves a 2 mm gutter between photos and draws cutting guide lines. Print it on photo paper and cut along the guides โ€” usually far cheaper than ordering prints at a studio.
Q: Are my uploaded photos stored on a server?
No. This is a pure front-end page. Reading, cropping, background replacement and compression all happen locally through the browser Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is logged.
