Volume Units: Science & Facts

What are volume and capacity?

Volume is the three-dimensional space an object occupies, measured in units such as cubic meters and cubic centimeters. Capacity is how much a container can hold, measured in liters and milliliters. The two systems convert cleanly: 1 cubic meter = 1000 liters and 1 cubic centimeter = 1 milliliter, which is why this tool converts solid volume and liquid capacity units together.

The metric volume system

Metric volume units are built around the liter: 1 liter (L) = 10 deciliters = 1000 milliliters (mL) = 1000 cubic centimeters (cm³) = 1 cubic decimeter (dm³) = 0.001 cubic meters (m³). Neighboring units are usually 1000-fold steps: 1 cubic meter = 1000 liters = 1,000,000 milliliters.

US vs UK volume units

US and UK systems share names but not sizes: a US fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL while the UK fluid ounce is 28.4131 mL; a US pint is 473.2 mL vs 568.3 mL in the UK; a US gallon is 3.785 L vs 4.546 L in the UK. The US also has dry measure units (a dry quart is 1.101 L). Differences between systems can reach about 20%, so always identify the system before converting.

Common volume conversion quick facts

1 cubic meter = 1000 liters; 1 liter = 1000 milliliters; 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 liters; 1 UK gallon ≈ 4.546 liters; 1 US fluid ounce ≈ 29.57 mL; 1 US pint ≈ 0.473 L; 1 cubic inch ≈ 16.39 mL; 1 cubic foot ≈ 28.32 liters; 1 cubic yard ≈ 764.55 liters; 1 US oil barrel = 42 US gallons ≈ 158.99 liters. Volume Converter FAQ

Q: How many milliliters are in a liter? What about cubic meters?
A: 1 liter = 1000 milliliters = 1000 cubic centimeters. 1 cubic meter = 1000 liters, so 1 liter = 0.001 cubic meters. Also, 1 liter = 1 cubic decimeter.
Q: How do I convert gallons to liters?
A: Check the gallon type first: 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 liters and 1 UK gallon ≈ 4.546 liters, a difference of about 20%. US gallons are used in the US; UK gallons in the UK and other Commonwealth countries.
Q: Are milliliters and cubic centimeters the same?
A: Numerically yes - 1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter. They differ only in convention: mL for liquids, cm³ for solids and engineering, so you can treat them as one unit when converting.
Q: How much do US and UK volume units differ?
A: Fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons all have different sizes in the US and UK systems (see the science section above). Check which system a recipe or reference uses before converting.
Q: How can I quickly convert cubic meters and gallons in my head?
A: Multiply cubic meters by 1000 for liters; multiply US gallons by about 3.785 or UK gallons by about 4.546 for liters. Also useful: 1 cubic foot ≈ 28.32 L and 1 US fluid ounce ≈ 29.57 mL.
Q: Is my conversion data uploaded to a server?
A: No. All conversions run locally in your browser using standard international factors - no uploads, no sign-up, and nothing is stored after you leave.
